Dining in Darkness

Now this is an interesting concept . . . pay to eat in the dark. Dark Restaurant opened in Beijing, China last month. The only ones who can see are the waiters because they are wearing night vision goggles. The dining room is pitch dark with walls painted black. To keep it dark, no mobile phones, luminous watches or flashlights are allowed to be used by the customers.

The meal will be taken in this environment with the complete loss of vision. By starving one’s sense, your other senses are stimulated to full alert – all so the theory goes – and your food will taste like it’s never tasted before.

After doing a quick search online, I found that this is apparently becoming a trend. There are similar restaurants Zurich, Paris, Berlin, L.A. and other cities. I don't know, it seems kind of strange to me. Maybe it's romantic or something, but it seems like it would be an isolating experience and not good to go with friends because the talking would just get wierd.

What they need to do is combine more than one gimmick: an all dark fondue experience.

I don't quite understand how a restaurant like this could survive outside of a tourist destination.

"Your regular table, Mr. Smith?" the hostess asks.

"Could we get a booth by the wall this time?"
